The sculpture was originally installed as a temporary installation in 1994 and was on display for two years.
The Iron Horse consists of twelve life sized silhouettes of horses fabricated out of a fiber glass based material which is composed of up to 90% recycled materials. The horses are fastened directly to the decking of the bridge and are arranged so as not to impede pedestrian and bicycle circulation through their midst.
Iron Horse - 2019
This new version of the sculpture will remain true to the original but will feature improvements made possible by more recent technology. The horses were supported by steel posts fastened to each silhouette. The new version will incorporate the structure into the body of the horses.
An important component of the new version of the sculpture will be solar powered LED lighting which will gently illuminate the horses at night rendering the work more visible to vehicular and pedestrian traffic below as well as providing lighting for pedestrians on the bridge.
